The overview effect
“One of the few things left in the world, aside from the world itself, that sadden me every day is an awareness that…”2 Looking down on planet Earth, the phenomenon called the overview effect shifts the perspective of many returning astronauts. It causes intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world and the urge to do something about it. Being constantly informed about everything that’s happening in the world make people worry either about things they can't change or nothing but their own wellbeing. The weight of the internet, of the information and thoughts, is estimated to be 50 grams. This much is enough to cause one’s helplessness.
